Welcome to the town of Challenge-Brownsville, an unincorporated town in Yuba County. It is located southwest of Sharon Valley and Challenge, northwest of Greenville, north of Frenchtown, and northeast of Rackerby. It has a population of 1,225 (as of a 2009 estimate). Its elevation is 2,313 feet. The average high temperature in July is 92.4°, and the average low temperature in January is 33.6°.
Yuba County is one of California’s original 27 counties founded on February 18th in 1850. Yuba County has a diverse landscape that boasts grand rivers, thriving farmland, friendly communities and numerous recreational possibilities that extend into the Sierra foothills. The communities have that small town feel so many people are seeking. With a population of about 81,575 people, residents enjoy relaxed living and affordable housing, while both ocean beaches and mountain skiing are only a couple of hours away. And, amazingly, the county’s border is just 30 minutes north of the State Capitol in Sacramento.
The southern area of the county is also where you will find the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Toyota Amphitheater, and the Yuba-Sutter Gold Sox, a collegiate league baseball team that makes its home in Marysville. It’s only a short walk or drive from downtown Marysville to the vast Beckwourth Riverfront Park, where you will find boating, picnicking, several soccer fields and motocross tracks.
Slip into the foothills of Yuba County and you will discover abundant recreational activities including wineries, birding, biking, boating, camping, fishing, golfing, hiking and fishing. It’s just a short drive to Bullards Bar Dam (the fifth largest curvature dam in the United States) and Reservoir, Collins Lake, Lake Francis and over 25,000 acres of wildlife area that includes National Forest Land.
